Chefchaouen is a place you must explore if you are visiting Morocco!

Located in northwest Morocco, deep in the Rif Mountains, it is a small town that has been painted different hues of blue.

How To Get There:

*After arriving in Fez the day before, we decided to hire a driver and go on a roadtrip to The Blue City. The drive was about 6-7 hours round trip with some rest stops in between. I think a day tour was enough to explore the city but if you really want to find more hidden gems then stick around for another day.

What to do:

*Shop at the souks: I had the best shopping experience here in Chefchaouen. The shops weren’t crowded at all since most tourists in the area were mainly concerned about finding the best spots to take an Instagram worthy picture. Take note that prices are marked up because sellers are trying to give you their highest prices since they are expecting you to engage in bargaining. Just a tip – never take the first offer..negotiate!

*Take photos: There’s no better place to take pictures than a whole city covered in blue and white for a nice backdrop in your photos!

Being that Chefchaouen is a more conservative city, it is recommended that you wear clothing that fully covers your body to be respectful of their culture. We went during Ramadan, which is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, where Muslims observe strict fasting from sunrise to sunset.

What to wear:

  • I wore a long sleeveless dress (with a split) and a sweater to put over my shoulders and a scarf to wrap around my legs (although they were taken off during the photo sessions). In the early mornings, it’s quite chilly – instead of wearing a sweater you can always opt to wear a stylish scarf around your shoulders and/or waist if you are wearing a short skirt or shorts, like myself.

Food:

  • We stopped at a restaurant called Riad Hicham and dined on the rooftop terrace. The food was delicious, I had the vegetable soup as a starter (highly recommend) and a shrimp dish.

Have you ever been to Chefchaouen? If, not are you planning on visiting any time soon!?
